This week, we’re joined by Princess Cabotaje, a PhD student in Chemistry specialising in Molecular Biomimetics at Uppsala University, Sweden.

Princess graduated from the University of the Philippines Diliman cum laude with a Bachelor’s in Chemistry. She then took up her Masters in the same field at the University of San Carlos (USC) — Talamban Campus, where she was a recipient of a fully-f∑unded scholarship through the Department of Science and Technology’s Accelerated Science and Technology Human Resource Development Program.

At USC, her thesis revolved around the isolation, purification and characterization of α- glucosidase inhibitors. Currently, her PhD project seeks to utilise the diversity of hydrogenase for energy applications. Since 2020, Princess has been a mentor at GradMAP, a mentorship network that aims to provide support to Filipino students for their graduate school applications. Today, she stands as the Vice President of the Executive Committee, helping drive the network’s various initiatives.

Some fun facts about Princess:

  1. Princess has recently realized that she’s a marks(wo)man. She can quickly learn how to hit bullseye in any sport (e.g., gun-shooting, archery, darts).
  2. Princess is a mom to a 7-month old kitten called Yuumi who helps her enforce a decent work-life balance.
  3. Her dance covers got the attention of well-known Kpop stars. She got featured in SHINee Key’s IG story and one of her cover videos was liked by Jessi.

Let’s all say hi to Princess this week!

A chemist with a specialization in Molecular Biomimetics, Dr. Princess Cabotaje took over a year ago while she was a PhD student at Uppsala University, Sweden researching how to use hydrogenases for energy applications. A woman of many hats, she was also a mentor at GradMAP, providing support for Filipino students hoping to pursue graduate studies.

This October, Princess finally completed her PhD in Chemistry to much acclaim. Her research has not only been published in notable academic journals such as Cell, Nature, and the American Chemistry Society, but she has also become a co-patent holder for novel hydrogenases. In addition to her publications, Princess’s work netted her a finalist spot at the Coimbra Group 3-Minute Thesis competition as well as best poster and oral presentation at various international conferences.
