For our final week of May, Pinoy Scientists is featuring the Data and Computation (D&C) Research Group.
The D&C Research Group was established in August 2020. Initially housed under the Theoretical Physics Laboratory, they became part of the GANAP (Gravity, Astronomy, Nuclear and Particle Physics) Laboratory in 2021. Over time, D&C grew into an interdisciplinary hub committed to advancing data-driven astrophysics, computational physics, and data science for social good.
The group is led by Dr. Reinabelle “Reina” Reyes, a renowned astrophysicist with a Ph.D. in Astrophysics from Princeton University. She is best known for helping confirm Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity on cosmic scales and received the Outstanding Young Scientist Award for Astrophysics from the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) in 2023. Her research, data science leadership, and science communication has shaped D&C’s research agendas.
D&C’s research includes observational to gravitational wave astronomy, physics-informed machine learning methods, and data science for social good. D&C contributes to the national conversation on these topics by publishing in international journals, and participating in conferences and public science forums to advocate for open science, reproducibility, and collaboration.
In January 2025, Dr. Reyes was appointed Director of the Space Science Missions Bureau at the Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA), where she oversees research and development relevant to the country’s space science missions. She remains involved in collaborative research and mentoring within the group.
The D&C Research Group pushes the boundaries of science and continues to engage with institutions like UPD NIP, PhilSA, DOST, and academic partners both locally and internationally.
Updates for the group’s activities can be found on LinkedIn.
Some fun facts about D&C:
- D&C’s founder, Dr. Reinabelle Reyes, is also the co-founder of Pinoy Scientists
- D&C’s logo could be interpreted as a black hole binary, galaxy merger, or gravitational wave
- D&C mems love bowling and eating together
