This week we’re probing into the life of Pinoy Scientist Jaime Rodolfo “Jaro” Garcia III, a PhD researcher and student at Newcastle University in the United Kingdom and member of the Bioscience for Sustainable Consumer Products Collaborative Training Partnership under the United Kingdom Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC).
Jaro completed his undergraduate degree at the Ateneo de Manila University, graduating cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. While there, he spent some months working as an intern at IMEC Philippines. He was involved in a project that examined fibrosis initiation through impedance spectroscopy, using electrochemical characterization techniques to study synovial cells and DNA damage as caused by reactive oxygen species. After, he moved to Belgium to take up his Master of Chemistry at KU Leuven. He graduated from his Master’s as cum laude just last year and has since been doing his PhD at Newcastle University in the United Kingdom.
As a PhD researcher, Jaro specializes in the development of molecular probes. He integrates concepts of polymer chemistry, nanomaterials, and biotechnology to develop solutions to biological challenges. In addition to his position as a PhD researcher, he is also a member of the Bioscience for Sustainable Consumer Products Collaborative Training Partnership under UK’s BBSRC, with whom he is working on his thesis.
Some fun facts about Jaro:
- He spends his free time testing recipes
- He has a strange obsession with the A Song of Ice and fire book series
- He is convinced that organic chemistry is literal sorcery
