Meet Dr. Denise Matias, a research scientist at the Institute for Social Ecological Research in Frankfurt, Germany. There, she undertakes social-ecological research on the Mongolian steppe ecosystem.

Denise graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology from Ateneo de Manila University, after which she pursued a graduate diploma in Environmental Science at the University of the Philippines Diliman.

Denise then proceeded to the Central European University in Budapest, Hungary for her Master of Science in Environmental Science and Policy. For her Master’s thesis, she assessed the adaptive capacity of indigenous Palaw’ans in Palawan for her thesis.

Before pursuing her PhD, Denise also worked as a junior researcher at the Centre for Development Research in Germany, where she studied honey gathering by indigenous Tagbanuas in Palawan. Denise then took up her PhD at the University of Bonn, with her dissertation also focusing on indigenous honey gathering — specifically, the enterprise’s sustainability.

Over the years, Denise has held numerous other positions and engaged in different kinds of research — but we’ll leave it up to her to explain it to you guys this week! For the meantime, let’s all welcome Denise to the Pinoy Scientists fam!
