Taking over this week is Gracile Celine “Gee” Roxas, a Science Research Specialist at the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP)!
Gee graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry at the University of the Philippines Los Baños. At the NHCP, she conducts conservation science research, practices interventive conservation of heritage objects and delivers lectures and workshops on heritage conservation.
Gee also works as a junior conservator at Artemis Art Restoration Services, where she assists in the restoration of paintings and artworks. In addition to her many hats, Gee is also currently taking up her Master’s in Chemistry at the University of the Philippines Diliman.
Curious about what exactly Gee does? Here’s a preview: one of her ongoing projects involves establishing the chemical profile of the artworks of National Artist Fernando Amorsolo. This involves using microscopy to describe the layers of the painting, elemental and mineral analysis to describe the pigments present and organic analysis to identify the types of paint binders.
Fun facts: In line with her work, Gee’s birthday falls on May 18, which is incidentally International Museum Day! Her name also sounds like a dipeptide – hence her social media name, glycylserine. Gee is also an avid on-site sketcher and petter of cats.
Let’s all welcome Gee to the growing Pinoy Scientists fam!

Three years later and she’s still upping her conservation skills, now studying at the University of Glasgow under their Master of Philosophy - Textile Conservation program through the British Council’s Chevening Scholarship. She had just recently concluded her dissertation studying the lightfastness of the historically used aniline blue dye.
