Happy Sunday everyone! Today we’re (virtually) moving from Japan to France with our new featured Pinoy Scientist. Meet Romar Avila, a master’s student in physical chemistry under the Erasmus Mundus program titled Surface, Electro, Radiation, and Photo Chemistry (SERP+).
Romar is currently in his 2nd semester at the Paris-Saclay University, where he now works (from home) as a graduate research intern. He also spent one semester each at the University of Porto in Portugal and the University of Genoa in Italy.
Romar obtained his undergraduate degree in materials engineering at the University of the Philippines Diliman. His previous research was on the splitting of water into O2 and H2 gas using solid oxide electrolysis cells. His current work involves thin film deposition of high entropy oxides, a class of materials which have the potential to be used for energy storage as supercapacitors or batteries.
Fun fact: With his experience living abroad, Romar can now introduce himself in languages – Filipino, English, French, Italian and Portuguese! #cultured
Even funner fact: Back in 2017, Romar went viral for his iconic lipsync to Frozen’s Let It Go, where he dressed up as Elsa for UP Diliman’s Miss Engineering.
Let’s all welcome Romar to the Pinoy Scientists Fam!

Now having graduated with two Master’s degrees for Chemistry and one for Materials Science and Engineering from three different universities in Europe under the SERP+ program, he is currently pursuing his PhD at the University of Twente, Netherlands. His work remains concentrated on semiconductor devices and thin film fabrication.
