Buona serata! This week, we’re joined by Loraine Kay Cabral, a PhD student in Molecular Biomedicine at the University of Trieste.

Kay graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology from the University of Santo Tomas. She then worked as a research and technical assistant at St. Luke’s Medical Center, later taking up her Masters in Molecular Medicine at the same institute.

Before proceeding to her PhD, she also taught molecular techniques to Masters students at St. Luke’s and Trinity University of Asia as well as served as a quality officer at St. Luke’s Human Cancer Biobank Research Unit.

Kay’s dissertation currently revolves around the molecular profiling of liver cancer to develop potential therapeutic targets.

She is also a mentor at SIDHI (Science Integrated Direction for Highschool Investigators, an organization that aims to promote a culture of science, technology and innovation among Filipino high school students.

Some fun facts about Kay:

  1. She won the logo making contest for the Philippine Society for Cell Biology. The logo currently being used by the society is her original design!
  2. She enjoys watching crime investigation TV series.
  3. Though she doesn’t know how to swim, she’s explored quite a few beaches and tried different types of water adventures. From surfing and cliff jumping, to swimming with whale sharks and snorkeling—of course with the help of a life vest!
