To close off May, we have Dr. Lorenz Chua, a postdoctoral researcher at the Berlin Institute of Health (BIH) at Charité Universitätsmedizin-Berlin.

Lorenz graduated cum laude with a Bachelor’s degree in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology from the University of the Philippines Diliman , where his thesis investigated how microRNA regulated the expression of a drug-metabolizing enzyme. While taking up Masters units in Molecular Biology, he also worked as a research associate at the Diseases Molecular Biology and Epigenetics Laboratory.

Lorenz later finished his Master of Science in Molecular Biology at the International Max Plank Research School – Georg-August University Göttingen in Germany, where he explored the impact of a certain gene on the inflammation and proliferation of colorectal cancer cells. Last 2022, he graduated with a PhD in Biochemistry summa cum laude from BIH, with his thesis unraveling the disease mechanisms of different lung pathologies using single-cell RNA sequencing.

Currently, Lorenz’s research revolves around high-resolution transcriptomic profiling using single-cell RNA-sequencing and spatial transcriptomics, with a special emphasis on respiratory diseases like COVID-19 and pulmonary fibrosis.

A few fun facts about Lorenz:

  1. He’s into mixology, but leans towards gin and vermouth based cocktails.
  2. His brain has a dedicated section for random memes and soundbites.
  3. He wrote his thesis listening to Taylor Swifts’ Folklore and Evermore albums on repeat (any other Swifties in the Pinoy Scientists community?)
