Our next Pinoy Scientist for 2022 is Carmela Caballero, a Filipino surgeon, breast cancer researcher and a mentor for Science Integrated Direction for High School Investigators (SIDHI Philippines).

After obtaining her professional license and working briefly in Singapore, she moved to Brussels, Belgium in 2014 for a surgical research fellowship at the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC).

In 2018, Carmela started with the Breast International Group (BIG) as a medical advisor for breast cancer research.

As a doctor and researcher, she was trained to ease pain, provide cure, and be objective. She once felt that creativity and spontaneity had to take a back seat for her to excel in her career which requires precise methodology, critical thinking and objectivity.

During the 2020 pandemic, under the blanket of confinement and the harsh reality of our common vulnerability, her creative spirit found its voice.

Her mission today, as she celebrates her 40th birthday is to radiate positive energy that enables healing from within and contribute to nation-building. By merging science and creativity, she hopes to inspire people and encourage critical thinking while harnessing their artistry. Connect with her at thehumandoctor.com.

Three fun facts about Carmela:

  1. She is afraid of frogs.
  2. To de-stress, she does yoga, walking, and boxing.
  3. She believes in this saying by Coco Chanel… “If you’re sad, add more lipstick and attack.”
