This week, we’re joined by Wilfredo Barrera Jr. who is taking up his Joint National PhD in Sustainable Development and Climate Change at the University of Florence and Scuola Universitaria Superiore IUSS Pavia, both in Italy.
Wilfredo graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Southern Luzon State University, where he later also worked as an Instructor. He then finished a Master of Science in Genetics at the University of the Philippines Los Baños, also taking up PhD units for the same program.
For his current PhD, Wilfredo is exploring impact and adaptation strategies for crops through the lens of climate change and water resources. His research interests broadly span genetic diversity, conservation and adaptation of crops to climate change; assessment of climate change impacts using crop modeling; crop water use and productivity among others.
Three things to know about Wilfredo:
- He left his grandparents’ house after finishing elementary and since then he lived and relied on the help of other people or relatives to survive and scholarships to finish his studies.
- Wilfredo is a thyroid cancer survivor. Two years ago, he was diagnosed with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). He decided to surgically remove his thyroid and later found out that the tumor was cancerous.
- He was the first Filipino to be awarded a scholarship for the first National PhD in Sustainable Development and Climate Change in Italy.
Let’s all welcome Wilfredo to the Pinoy Scientists community!
