Meet our Pinoy Scientist of the Week: Dr Wenchie Lumbera, Assistant Professor at the College of Veterinary Medicine of the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB).
Wenchie graduated with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) at UPLB in 2014, where her thesis compared the inhibition of hog cholera virus and porcine parvovirus in suckling pigs from sows supplemented with specific blend feed additives.
After graduating, Wenchie then pursued a Master’s degree in Animal Life and Environmental Science at the Hankyong National University of South Korea. For her MS thesis, she investigated how Angelica gigas Nakai (AGN) or Korean angelica root could be enhanced to alleviate heat stress among animals.
Since 2018, Wenchie has taught general, systemic and clinical pathology for undergraduate DVM students. Currently, she is involved in the disease surveillance and diagnosis of African swine fever.
Despite being a veterinarian, Wenchie actually has never had a pet. Outside of work, she enjoys learning new makeup techniques and reviewing skincare products. She also loves cooking and travelling, especially going to theme parks in different countries.
Any animal lovers in the Pinoy Scientists community? You’re in for a treat this week! Let’s all welcome Wenchie to the Pinoy Scientists community.
