This week, we’re bringing in Pinoy Scientist Timothy James “TJ” Cipriano to map out his story as a geographer working as a researcher with the Advocates for Science and Technology for the People (AGHAM) and a lecturer/professor at the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman and Philippine Normal University Manila.

TJ received his Bachelor of Secondary Education majoring in Social Science from the Philippine Normal University, graduating as cum laude in 2014. He then worked at the Saint Pedro Poveda College High School Department, teaching geography, statistics, research, earth science, and a variety of social science courses. He joined the UP Resilience Institute and NOAH Center as a senior researcher right after taking his Master’s in Geography at UP Diliman.

Since completing his graduate degree, TJ has been doing research with the Advocates for Science and Technology for the People (AGHAM), taking on projects focused on the political ecology of coasts and rivers, disaster science, and environmental change, among others. He is also a senior lecturer at the Department of Geography at UP Diliman as well as an assistant professor of Geography at Philippine Normal University.

Some fun facts about TJ:

  • He did not intend to pursue a career in science or geography. It just so happened that he loved learning about geography and science because he was gifted with an atlas and almanac by his relatives and he was introduced to Sineskwela when he was in grade school, intensifying his love for science. Back then, he wanted to become a broadcast journalist at ABS-CBN.
  • He is a fan of professional wrestling, specifically WWE. He has been collecting WWE video games since 2000 since naabutan niya pa kahit paano ang Attitude Era ng WWE.
  • He knows some basic swimming styles as his parents enrolled him in a swimming school in the early 2000s. At present, he runs and hits the gym after work as it allows him to think with clarity whenever he is stressed out. Additionally, he is learning how to bike.
