As we look forward to celebrating Philippine Independence Day on June 12, this month we’re shining a light on the Balik Scientists wielding their expertise to uplift the Philippines.

Taking over this week is Dr. Syrus Gomari, transportation scientist, CEO and founder of Mobility Vision Plus (MoVi+)—a company that uses computer vision and data science to develop a next-generation urban mobility planning product. He graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from De La Salle University, later ranking in the Top 9 of the May 2014 civil engineer licensure examinations.

Syrus then embarked on a Master of Science in Infrastructure Planning with a focus on transport from the University of Stuttgart in Germany. His thesis modelled cycling in a travel demand model considering the supply and demand side. After stints as a consultant in urban mobility, Syrus took up a Doctor of Engineering in Transportation Systems at the Technical University of Munich, where his doctoral research focused on developing a methodology for the quality assessment of mobility-related information systems.

At MoVi+, Syrus aims to empower sustainable urban mobility planning. Since the app’s launch in March 2023, the company has engaged 6 cities in the Philippines and worked hand-in-hand with stakeholders across the government, NGOs, private partners, and the community.

Fun facts about Syrus:

1. He has lived (more than 2 years) in 5 cities in 3 countries that have completely different cultures and languages.
2. He speaks 4 languages, yet is an an expert of none. At the age of 10, he could barely speak English and could not speak a word of Filipino.
3. Toy cars, Lego, and carpets may have had a lot to do with why he is in the field of sustainable mobility/transportation sciences!
