We’re ending February with another strong Woman in Science! Taking over this week is Shannen Recio, who’s taking up her Bachelor’s degree in Global Diseases Biology at the University of California Davis.
Shannen is currently a research intern at Eerkens Anthropology Lab where she studies ancient diet, diseases, and forensics. Specifically, she looks at human and animal remains dating back from 3000 BCE to present from all around the world.
Shannen has also been part of a cardiovascular lab, a bovine lab where she studied the effects of antibiotics on cows, and has even done research on plankton. After graduating, Shannen plans to pursue medicine and become a surgeon one day. In fact, she started the Doctors Without Borders in UC Davis and hopes to volunteer with them abroad soon.
Shannen first moved to the US at the age of 11. However, the Philippines still remains close to her heart as every summer, she goes home to lead a service project where school supplies are donated to medical missions in Tondo, Manila.
Let’s all welcome Shannen to the Pinoy Scientists fam!

In 2020, Shannen Recio first took over our page right in the middle of her Bachelor’s degree in Global Diseases Biology. While at the time she was working as a research intern at Eerkens Anthropology Lab, she expressed a strong interest in pursuing medicine and becoming a surgeon in the future.
In the four years since her takeover, Shannen has followed through on that dream, working not only as a pulmonary research intern for the Center for Health and Environment at the University of California Davis during her undergrad years, but also as a part-time birth doula for Sutter Health. At the moment, she is a clinical research coordinator for the Lung Health Cohort at UC San Francisco.
