Say hi to our Pinoy Scientist of the week Riel Ingeniero, who is a PhD candidate at the Integrated School of Ocean Sciences at the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel in Germany.
Riel graduated with a BS in Environmental Science from the Ateneo de Manila University after which he pursued a MS degree in Marine and Lacustrine Science and Management, major in Environmental Impact and Remediation across three universities in Belgium. His Master’s thesis tackled primary productivity and nitrogen uptake rates in the subarctic and temperate North Atlantic Ocean.
Before embarking on his PhD program, Riel taught research for two years at the main campus of Philippine Science High School. Beyond his impressive academic record, Riel also has wide experience in a variety of sectors — having worked as a research associate, environmental scientist and sustainability consultant through the years.
Some fun facts about Riel:
- Ever since highschool, scholarships have helped support Riel in his studies.
- His first ever travel abroad was in 2012, when he attended a three-week short course at the University of Osnabruck, Germany. Since then, he has been able to travel to 12 countries in Europe!
- He speaks a bit of German, having studied the language for four months.
- In his free time, Riel enjoys watching Netflix, playing mobile games and cooking Filipino food.
Let’s all say moin moin (another German word for hello) to Riel and give him a warm welcome to the Pinoy Scientists community!
