Next on our May lineup is Pinoy Scientist Ria Ysabelle Flora, a physicist, economist, and data scientist currently working as the power solutions lead for Aboitiz Data Innovation under the Aboitiz Power Corporation, Philippines.

Ria received her Bachelor’s degree in Physics from De La Salle University (DLSU) Manila where she also minored in Economics. After a year as an energy trader at Solar Philippines, she took up her Master’s in Data Science at the Asian Institute of Management. Once she completed her graduate degree, Ria joined Senti Techlabs Inc.. As a data scientist, she performed market studies to evaluate the state of artificial intelligence in the Philippines, eventually becoming the head of special projects.

Ria is now with Aboitiz Data Innovation under the Aboitiz Power Corporation. Her expertise in data science and artificial intelligence is being put to extensive use as the lead of power solutions at the company, where she is utilizing both to develop strategies for driving business development. Since the beginning of this year, she has also been a part time lecturer at her alma mater, DLSU.

Some fun facts about Ria:

  • She took up BS Physics minor in Economics in college despite her national assessment test saying that she was best suited for religious studies. It began as a joke but she eventually grew to love it. She was probably one of the loudest and most uncharacteristic graduates of the program in DLSU because she doesn’t consider herself a stereotypical nerd.
  • The first indicator for her level of stress is her hair. Whenever something funky is happening with it (color, cut, or bangs), she is definitely under immense stress.
  • She has actually managed to find the middle ground between all the degrees she had taken within a corporate setting. This is probably the best part of her job. She also teaches in DLSU as an opportunity to pay it forward to the green and white community.
