Meet Remika Gupana, a PhD student in Geography at the University of Zurich!
Remika graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Geology from the University of the Philippines Diliman. After graduating, she worked as a geologist for Holcim Philippines and Gutteridge, Haskins and Davey Pre Ltd. In the latter role, Remika engaged in geotechnical and groundwater quality assessments for various surface infrastructures.
Remika then undertook a Master’s in Hydroinformatics and Water Management across four universities under the Erasmus Mundus programme: Brandenburg University of Technology, Germany; University of Newcastle, England; Polytechnic University of Barcelona, Spain and the University of Nice, France
For her PhD studies, Remika is developing techniques for sun-induced fluorescence retrieval in coastal areas and lakes.
Some fun facts about Remika:
- Her parents came up with the name Remika. She is named after her two lolas: Remedios and Catalina
- She plays the ukulele to relax. The sound also helps her build a tropical atmosphere during grey winter days when she feels homesick.
- Despite loving and having access to different types of food, her favorites are still pritong galunggong and sinigang!

When Remika Gupana took over in March of 2021, she was a PhD student in Geography at the University of Zürich where she was studying how to perform sun-induced fluorescence retrieval in coastal areas and lakes.
In the three years since, she has completed her PhD and returned to the Philippines to work as a Remote Sensing Scientist at the University of the Philippines (UP) Marine Science Institute. She also joined the Balik Scientist program with the Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development, specializing in Water Quality Remote Sensing.
