Today is National Bicycle Day and to celebrate that, we have bike enthusiast Pinoy Scientist Engr. Ramir Seraphim Angeles whose work as a sustainable transport planner and Civil Engineer has involved, among other things, the development of bike routes and public transportation infrastructure in cities.
Ramir graduated Cum Laude from the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman with a degree in Civil Engineering. He became a registered Civil Engineer with the Professional Regulation Commission soon after before heading to Singapore in pursuit of his graduate degree. He completed his Master’s in Urban Science, Policy and Planning at the Singapore University of Technology and Design. Since then, he has returned to the Philippines as a researcher and consultant, focusing primarily on sustainable transport engineering for microtransit methods like tricycles and bicycles. Notably, he worked with the Quezon City Government in building their bike lane network and city bus program.
At the moment, Ramir’s focus is on Mobility Vision Plus Inc., a company he co-founded and now works at as a Transport Planning and Policy Mobilizer. Using their patented MoVi+ platform, they collect and process transport data for clients in both the government and private sector. He is also a researcher and consultant for the Move As One Coalition, UP National Center for Transportation Studies Foundation Inc., WeSolve Foundation, and Quezon City Government, among others.
Some fun facts about Ramir:
- He collects bicycles! He has a gravel bike for commuting and bikepacking, a folding bike he can bring inside public transport, a road bike, mountain bikes, a fixed gear bike, and even parts for a triathlon bike.
- He is a self-taught bike mechanic! He mostly learned from cycling forums, blogs, and YouTube videos. He has gathered enough tools and mostly second-hand bike parts he could probably open a small bike shop!
- He likes playing Tetris! He plays the original 1985 Tetris game with an NES console and a CRT TV. Did you know that you can beat the original game by scoring 999,999 points?
