Meet Pierangeli Vital, environmental microbiologist

She is currently University Researcher and Head of the Biological Research and Services Laboratory at the Natural Sciences Research Institute in the University of the Philippines Diliman.

Her research aims to answer food safety issues and focuses on identifying contamination in agricultural products and sources. In her studies, she performs various methods such as culture and molecular assays, microbial source tracking, quantitative microbial risk assessment, and multilocus sequence typing with application and importance to the detection and prevention of food-borne diseases.

She shares: “Be appreciative of all little and great things in life. After all, microbiology is the study of microorganisms, and these minute organisms have great impact to all of us (either in our lives, health, and of course, environment).”
