For this week’s takeover, we’re calling up Pinoy Scientists Engr. Philip Martinez, a licensed Electronics Engineer and Senior Science Research Specialist at the Department of Science and Technology – Advanced Science and Technology Institute (DOST – ASTI).

Philip graduated with a Bachelor’s in Electronics and Communications Engineering from the University of the Philippines Diliman. While there, he worked at the UP Wireless Communications Engineering Laboratory, continuing his research while he completed his Master’s in Electrical Engineering at the same university. He then took on a number of roles, notably serving as part of the research team in UP Diliman that developed ROGER: Robust and Rapidly Deployable GSM Base Stations and Backhaul for Emergency Response, a DOST – funded communication system for emergency response. He has also worked on projects with the Commission on Higher Education – Philippine-California Advanced Research Institutes (CHED – PCARI).

He is now with DOST – ASTI as a research and technical specialist. Currently, Philip serves as the Project Leader of the REIINN project: Resilient Education Information Infrastructure for the New Normal. He also spends his time teaching at UP Diliman and Ateneo de Manila University. This passion extends to his advocacies, where he is a co-founder and trainer at TEKhasa, where he provides workshops and lectures for working with technology

Some fun facts about Philip:

  1. His dominant hand is his left, but due to life constraints growing up in a right-hand dominated world, he can do some tasks – like using a computer mouse – with his non-dominant right hand.
  2. There was a time his name and engineer license number could be heard on-air twice: during the mandatory signing-on and signing-off announcement at the AM station he was affiliated with.
  3. Because he’s credited in a movie under the art department, he has an auto-generated IMDb profile. The movie is “Mang Jose” starring Janno Gibbs, where he was part of the team that produced the film’s electronics.
