One of the biggest threats to human and animal health today is antimicrobial resistance, which is when microbes evolve to become resistant to available medicines. Heeding the urgent call to address antimicrobial resistance is this week’s Pinoy Scientist, Patrick De Vera—Assistant Professor at the Manila Central University, College of Medical Technology.

Patrick graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology from Manila Central University and a Master of Science in Medical Technology from Philippine Women’s University. In between his educational stints, Patrick worked as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist at St. Luke’s Medical Center Extension Clinic as well as a Clinical Instructor and Lecturer at his undergraduate alma mater.

Patrick’s research interests range from how antibiotic resistance genes in the environment (e.g. through wastewater) influences antimicrobial resistance, to the impacts of climate change and disasters on emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases, as well as the human and environmental microbiome.

Currently, Patrick is involved in research projects profiling antimicrobial resistance in hospital wastewater in Caloocan City, as well as a pilot study broadly investigating hospital wastewater-based epidemiology.

Fun facts about Patrick:

  • He is a proud Obandeño. His hometown is Obando, Bulacan (famous for its seafoods and the Fertility Festival celebrated from May 17-19).
  • He is one of the current members of the Board of Directors of the Philippine Association of Schools of Medical Technology and Public Health, Inc. (PASMETH).
  • His hobbies include playing Dota 2, Pokémon, reading manga, building GunPla models, and watching Netflix/Anime in his free time.
