Meet Pat Lazatin, medical student and researcher
She is currently a fourth year medical student at Duke-NUS Medical School in Singapore. Under the Clinician-Scientist program, she spent her third year as a research intern at the Calcium Signalling Laboratory of the National Neuroscience Institute in Singapore.
Her research focused on novel therapies that would improve post-ischemic stroke outcomes in patients.
In particular, she studied the effect of treatment with an antibody (M4P) in rat animal models with a middle cerebral artery infarction.
She shares: “We have seen improvement of cerebral blood flow by about 70% compared to baseline post-administration of thrombolytics. This indicates to us that our drug, more than stabilizing cerebrovasculature also prevents formation of microthrombi that usually accompany thrombolysis and delays re-canalization. We’re pursuing further studies as to the mechanism of this, as it can potentially prevent future incidences of stroke.”
