Pinoy Scientists

Jethro Gallardo is a product engineer for GPU Chip Ops at NVIDIA Taiwan. Jethro’s responsibilities include analyzing product yield limiters, defining product test requirements, driving new product introduction, and continuously finding opportunities to improve the product process.

Deign Soriano is a research assistant and instructor pursuing his Masters in Environmental Management at the University of Reading. His dissertation tackles ecosystem services, ecological quality, and remote sensing.

Beatrice Maquilan is a multi-hyphenate chemistry undergraduate at the University of Tokyo and a science communicator. Her research interests include the development of sustainable materials for green energy and environmental preservation.

Robert Badrina is a weather specialist at the Marine Meteorology Services Section at PAGASA. He is currently a member of the Board of Trustees of the Philippine Meteorological Society, and also has a Certificate of Basic Pastoral Ministry from the Loyola School of Theology.

Marizza Delgado is a data scientist on Etsy’s Product Analytics team and Miss New York Earth USA 2021. She uses statistical methods to generate insights that inform product, engineering, and business decisions.

DJ Donn Matienzo is a chemical engineer, R&D scientist, and entrepreneur. He is a DOST-PCIEERD Balik Scientist at UP Diliman and Technological Institute of the Philippines, where he is a research fellow for the project called CIPHER

Dianne Aguilon, an entomologist and Assistant Professor at the University of the Philippines Los Baños. Her research interests include insect life history, insect diversity, ant ecology and taxonomy, pollination ecology, forest insect pests, among others.

Chino Bandonil is a PhD student in Molecular and Cell Biology at Taiwan’s Academia Sinica. He has worked on various projects, including investigating mitochondrial and glycolytic dynamics during cancer and stress conditions to studying neuron morphology and development.

Kriza Calumba is an Assistant Professor in Food Science and Chemistry at the University of the Philippines Mindanao. Her current research interests focus on probiotics, beer, underutilized resources, and the development of a traceability system for tuna in the Davao region.

Julliane Negre is an aspiring physician-scientist and current Biological Sciences undergraduate at Marquette University. For her undergraduate project, she is characterizing and developing a bacterial enzyme as a novel antibiotic drug target.

Queenie Tanjay is a senior laboratory technician in polymer chemistry in New Zealand. Her research involves the conversion of methane into bioplastics, bark biorefinery, digital packaging, among others.

Jonas Dumdum, a registered chemist and consultant at the think-tank Nomura Research Institute Singapore, Manila branch. Through the years, Jonas has held several roles in the sustainability sector.

Loraine Kay Cabral is a PhD student in Molecular Biomedicine at the University of Trieste. Her dissertation currently revolves around the molecular profiling of liver cancer to develop potential therapeutic targets.

Diane Gubatanga is a chemical engineer who specializes in sustainable energy research, with emphasis on hydrogen production.

Charles is a joint postdoctoral research fellow at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. He currently investigates the molecular causes of neuronal death in X-linked dystonia-parkinsonism (XDP), a uniquely Filipino disease endemic to his father’s hometown, the Panay Island of the Philippines.

Kristine Buenafe is a quantitative marine ecologist and research associate at the University of Queensland. Her work explores climate-smart and fisheries-focused spatial planning, applied marine conservation planning, as well as modelling the larval distribution of key economically viable fish species.

John Dale Dianala is an Assistant Professor at the University of the Philippines’ National Institute of Geological Sciences. His research interests lie in understanding where, how often, and why earthquakes happen by studying how tectonic faults deform in time and space.

Reginald Bernardo is a postdoctoral fellow at the Academia Sinica’s Institute of Physics. His research interests include dark energy, cosmology, alternative gravity, black holes, and gravitational waves.

Claudeline Cellan is a Senior Statistical Specialist at the Philippine Statistics Authority.

Dave Cayado is a PhD student in Neurolinguistics at Queen Mary, University of London. His PhD thesis revolves around the neurobiological bases of morphological processing in Tagalog.
