Joining us this week is DOST-PCIEERD Balik Scientist Noel Peter Tan, PhD, an Associate Professor in Chemical Engineering and Director of the Center for Advanced New Materials, Engineering, and Emerging Technologies (CANMEET) at the University of San Agustin (USA).
Noel graduated with a Bachelor’s degree cum laude in Chemical Engineering from Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan. He then finished a second Bachelor’s in Business Administration from Japan’s Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University, after which he took up a Masters of Chemical Engineering at Xiamen University in China. Finally, he finished his PhD in Chemical Technology at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
Beyond his studies, Noel also worked as a Production Supervisor at Del Monte Philippines and as a Senior Engineer at the Nano & Advanced Materials Institute in Hong Kong. He also served as a Balik Scientist at Xavier University and University of San Carlos.
Noel’s research interests include smart packaging, bioplastics, nano fiber membrane fabrication, and circular economy.
Here are a few fun facts about Noel:
- His lunchtime entertainment is “Judge Judy” show, an American arbitration-based reality court show that started in 1996. He never thought that a small-claim court show could be this amusing yet informative. One thing he realized from Judge Judy is how common sense plays a significant role in resolving most of her cases.
- He does not read a lot of fiction stories, aside from Haruki Murakami’s novels. He finds Murakami-san’s writing so realistic that he can easily put myself into his imaginative world. He thinks “The Colorless Tsukuro” is his best novel so far, having read it five times!
- He watches a lot of crime documentaries and horror movies. He enjoys watching and learning how crimes are solved through thorough investigation. Horror movies, on the other hand, makes him relax, weirdly enough.
