Flying in for our next takeover is Pinoy Scientist Engr. Mark “Mac” Joseph Pasciolco, PhD, a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). As both a biomolecular and licensed chemical engineer, Mac has focused his attention on developing anti-corrosion and anti-biofouling pipe coatings.
Mac earned his Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of the Philippines Diliman, graduating cum laude in 2019. Later that year, he jumped straight into his PhD at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, studying chemical and biomolecular engineering. While there, he took on a number of jobs, serving as both a hall tutor and teaching assistant. In 2023, he also spent a number of months as a visiting PhD student at the Instituto de Catalisis y Petroleoquimica of the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC) in Madrid, Spain. His dissertation explored the incorporation of an ionic liquid into ceramic epoxy coatings to prevent seawater-induced corrosion.
He now works at HKUST as a postdoctoral fellow, maintaining his research interest in anti-corrosion coatings. In his free time, Mac also volunteers at a few organizations, specifically Love Education Philippines and Mission for Migrant Workers (MFMW).
Some fun facts about Mac:
- He is an aviation geek! Over 12 months, he tried 10 different airlines and even booked a short haul flight last year to fly on the A380 – the world’s largest passenger aircraft – for the first time. He also keeps a flight tracking app on hand!
- He dreamt of being a doctor in high school because his sisters were all in the health sciences field, but he is really afraid of frogs.
- Outside of work, he tried learning the violin and loves to cook. Sometimes, he goes hiking and running. He also watches Thai BLs and is an avid fan of TayNew (he’s a certified Polca!)
