We’re back this week with Mark Jayson Felix, a Senior Science Research Specialist at the Philippine Space Agency.
Jayson received his Bachelor’s degree in Physics from the University of the Philippines Baguio before moving to UP Diliman to complete his Masters in Materials Science and Engineering. While there, he also joined the Semiconductor Group of the Condensed Matter Physics Laboratory—publishing several papers on the fabrication of terahertz (THz) metamaterials, a type of device that interacts with the range of electromagnetic radiation with frequencies in between microwaves and infrared radiation.
After graduating, Jayson worked on the PHL-MICROSAT Program as a University Researcher where he tested and calibrated the remote sensing capabilities of the Diwata-1 microsatellite. He then moved to lead the Remote Sensing and Product Development team at the GRASPED Project of the STAMINA4Space Program where they used data obtained from Diwata for different applications such as mapping, water and air quality assessment, post-disaster assessment, and monitoring of protected areas, among others.
Currently, Jayson is working at the Philippines Space Agency under the Earth Sciences Space Mission Studies Division where he puts his expertise on remote sensing to use by conducting research related to water quality and air-water interactions.
Some fun facts about Jayson are:
- He failed horribly in the first two exams of his first college Math subject and decided to switch courses if he also failed the third. Fortunately, he passed the third exam with the third highest score in the class!
- He is not a teacher by profession, but he loves teaching and sharing his learnings with young minds.
- He loves coffee (black coffee is his go-to) and outdoor activities like hiking, running, and swimming.
Let’s all give Jayson a warm welcome!
