Ushering in October is Pinoy Scientist Maria Elena Grace “Meggy” Katigbak, a Gender Specialist and Feminist Researcher-Writer working for the Asian Peoples’ Movement on Debt and Development, Artisanal Gold Council, and various International Development Organizations as a researcher and consultant.
Meggy completed her Bachelor of Arts in Speech Communications from the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman, graduating cum laude. She worked as a media producer for the Philippine Society for Orphan Disorders, Inc. before moving to Assumption Antipolo (AA) Senior High School as a teacher. It was during her stint at AA that she began working for the Asian Peoples Movement on Debt and Development as part of the Development Finance Team, focusing on tax, fiscal, and gender justice as well as economic inequality. Returning to UP Diliman, she began taking her Master of Arts in Women and Development. She also began researching for International Development Organizations such as the Center for Economic and Social Rights and the International Trade Union Confederation – Asia Pacific.
While completing her Master’s degree, Meggy is a Gender and Investment Specialist for the Artisanal Gold Council’s planetGOLD project and a Program and Research Staffer of the Asian Peoples’ Movement on Debt and Development. She is also a fellow for Women of the South Speak Out (WOSSO), tackling unpaid care work in the Philippines.
Some fun facts about Meggy:
- She is a singer, songwriter, composer, and music producer. She has her own Spotify page where her original music is published. She also produces music in line with her campaigns as a feminist activist.
- She loves to do pole, dance, and aerials! If she is not working, she is training in different forms of dance such as contemporary, chair, street, and pole dance, as well as the aerial arts. She has also started taking adult ballet.
- She teaches Hatha, Vinyasa, Rhythmic, and other forms of Yoga ! She has been practicing yoga for more than a decade and took her 200HR Yoga Teacher’s Training Course in 2018.
