Taking over this week is Dr. Ma. Rowena Romana-Eguia, a scientist at the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center.

Rowena, also known as Weng, graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Zoology from the University of the Philippines Diliman. She then took up an MS Degree in Genetics at Swansea University in Wales and a PhD in Agricultural Sciences (Fish Population Genetics) at Tohoku University in Japan.

In 1982, Weng joined SEAFDEC as a technical assistant and rose through the ranks to become a Scientist at the Aquaculture Department, a Program Leader for Quality Seed for Sustainable Use and a Team Leader for Freshwater Aquaculture Commodities.

Weng’s current research projects revolve around studying tilapia lake virus in pond soil and water, as well as the use of plant-based protein sources in tilapia feeds, among many others. Beyond her current positions, Weng also teaches at De La Salle University and Enderun Colleges.

Given that Weng is based in SEAFDEC’s lakeshore research station in Laguna Lake, she has quite the unique commute: a 30-minute shuttle boat ride! (Beats Manila traffic anyway, right?).

She is also fond of travelling, with one of her most memorable trips being a week-long visit to the UN Headquarters for meetings on marine genetic resources and biodiversity as part of the Philippine delegation. Weng is also a cat person — with 11 pet cats and a cabinetful of cat figurines!

Let’s all welcome Weng to the Pinoy Scientists family!
