In the US, October is recognized annually as the Filipino American History Month. Which is why we’re ringing in the month with Lowell Iporac (he/him/they), a PhD candidate at the Institute of Environment at the Florida International University!
Lowell graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Biology, magna cum laude from the California State University San Bernardino after which he took up a Master of Science in Biology from the Florida International University.
In his current doctoral work, Lowell explores interactions between macroalgae and invertebrates as well as investigates the characteristics of habitat-forming organisms in tropical shallow coastal systems.
With this information, Lowell then creates outreach and citizen science programs to increase the public’s environmental literacy and engagement with science.
Some fun facts about Lowell
- Lowell is an open-water diver, but a poor swimmer (Anyone else like this? Say hi in the comments!)
- Lowell doesn’t like taking photos of himself but that will temporarily change this week!
- Lowell does a lot of mobile phone gaming
