Joining us this week is archaeologist and community heritage practitioner Llenel “Ellie” De Castro!
Ellie graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Basic Medical Sciences under the University of the Philippines Manila’s INTARMED Program. She then took up a Master of Science in Archaeology, where her thesis focused on the impact of archaeology in Palawan’s Dewil Valley.
Since pivoting to archaeology, Ellie has participated in various research projects such as the Palawan Island Paleohistory Research Project and the Catanauan Archaeological and Heritage Project as a project manager, research assistant and excavator.
Ellie is also a 2016 National Geographic Society Explorer and in 2019, she became a National Geographic Young Leader.
A fun fact about Ellie: She’s an archaeologist but digging is not her favorite activity! Telling stories from data is what she enjoys the most

Since her takeover in November of 2023, archeologist Ellie de Castro has had an eventful six months. After a two-year search, she and her father - Leo de Castro - have solved a decades-long mystery: Who is Nellie E. Brown?
An Olongapo City native, Ellie’s father was an alumnus of the local elementary school named Nellie E. Brown Elementary School (NEBES). When it became clear no one knew where the name originally came from, the pair began searching for the school’s namesake. A reply from the US National Archives and Records Administration finally led them to an article about Nellie E. Brown, who was the favorite elementary school teacher of Roger Brown Nickerson, the commander overseeing NEBES’s construction.
You can read more about it on Ellie’s website and this Philippine Star article.
