We’re opening up the month of September with Pinoy Scientist Lesly Zaren Endrinal, a Failure Analysis industry expert clocking in 25 years of experience in the field! She is currently a Failure Analysis Lead at Google USA.
Lesly graduated from the University of the Philippines Diliman with a Bachelor’s in Electronics and Communications Engineering. She spent a year teaching then held a number of engineering positions afterwards. She took up her Master’s in Electronics and Communications Engineering with a major in Microelectronics at De La Salle University, doing her thesis on the failure analysis of microelectronic devices. Moving to the Netherlands for a time, she also became the Principal Product Engineer at NXP Semiconductors before making her way to California where she lives to this day.
She is now the Failure Analysis Lead at Google USA and the Chair of the Die-Level Roadmap Council (DLRC): Isolation Domain of the Electron Device Failure Analysis Society. She recently won the Google Women Achievement Award San Diego in April 2024, and has at least 9 patents to her name globally.
Some fun facts about Lesly:
- During college, she dreaded her Physical Education subject the most. She had a conditional pass (grade of 4.0) during her weightlifting class and she literally farted while doing a single bench press of 50 lbs. She was 5’6 and weighed 160 lbs. Since then, it became her goal to be stronger and she got hooked on weightlifting and crossfit.
- She used to love coffee, having up to 10 ways to make it. She was like most people who collect Starbucks reward points, ordering 6 shots of espresso in a Venti cup when she redeemed her rewards. That day, she also had 5 cups of Americano and a box of coffee malt balls. That night she had a caffeine overdose and hasn’t drunk caffeine since. She still drinks decaf coffee though.
- She’s a big fan of the Spice Girls and Alicia Keys. Had she not been an engineer, she would have been a performer.
More like a comedian, actually.
