Featured on August 13, 2023

Next on our lineup of August takeovers is another Balik Scientist. Meet Dr. Lawrence A. Limjuco, a licensed chemical engineer and senior lecturer at the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman. He is also a member of the Department of Science and Engineering – Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research & Development (DOST-PCIEERD) technical panel, acting as the chairman for two projects!

Dr. Lawrence first studied chemical engineering at Ateneo De Davao University. After graduating, he worked as a production supervisor at San Miguel Brewery, Inc. He then took up an integrated Masters and PhD Energy Science and Technology program at Myongji University, South Korea. He graduated as a Research Honor Awardee in 2017, having explored the integration of metal oxides and ionophores into polymeric composite membranes for energy research. He then took on several teaching and research positions at Myongji University and the National Research Foundation (NRF) of South Korea.

He returned to the Philippines in 2020 under the DOST-PCIEERD Balik Scientist Program, conducting workshops and working as a supervisor and researcher to renewable energy research projects across the country. He is currently at UP Diliman, teaching courses for materials science and chemical engineering. He is also leading several DOST projects investigating materials for next generation batteries and policy research for waste-to-energy sustainability.

Some quick facts about Lawrence:

  1. He hadn’t drunk any alcoholic beverages until his first job as a beerman but is now the Department’s representative at “fastest beer drinking” events.
  2. He’s an extreme introvert but finds himself comfortable talking to big crowds during technical discussions/presentations.
  3. He didn’t used to sing, not even for himself, but he later became a singer for the Church.
