Sliding into your timeline this week is Pinoy Scientists Kimberly “Kim” Lagrama, a materials engineer and tribologist working on the construction of the European Spallation Source in Sweden as a Lead Design Engineering and Piping Engineering Specialist.

Kim completed her Bachelor of Science in Materials Engineering at the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman. During her undergraduate years, she spent some time with Lufthansa Technik as an Engineering Intern. After graduation, she worked for Fluor Corporation as a Piping Design and Material Engineer where she managed piping packages for constructing Energy and Chemical plants for various clients. During this time, she also got her Corrosion Technician Certification. In 2017, she joined an Erasmus Mundus program for her Masters in Mechanical Engineering, receiving a scholarship and completing her degree at three Universities: Luleå University of Technology, University of Leeds, and University of Ljubljana. While there, she specialized in corrosion, wear, and tribology of piping and machine elements.

Putting her extensive technical expertise in piping and process engineering to good use, Kim is now a Lead Design Engineering and Piping Engineering Specialist at the European Spallation Source at Lund, Sweden. Since 2023, she has also been taking her Masters in Industrial Economics and Management at the Blekinge Institute of Technology.

Some fun facts about Kim:

  • She is proud to be the first Filipino employee to join the European Spallation Source, a research facility which is under construction and set to become the most powerful neutron source in the world.
  • She is a newbie birdwatcher and an amateur wildlife photographer. She wishes to one day photograph the Arctic Fox in its winter coat against a snowy background.
  • She once spent a week in a nature reserve in the Swedish Lapland during the middle of winter, just to observe and photograph the majestic Golden Eagle.
