From one engineering discipline to another—this week, we’re joined by Justin Valdez, a Coastal Engineering PhD student at Waseda University, Japan.
Justin graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering. After working at a construction company as a project engineer for around two years, he decided to pursue a graduate degree in coastal engineering at Waseda University—where he graduated with a Master of Engineering in 2019!
Aside from coastal engineering, Justin’s research interests revolve around structural engineering and disaster risk management. His primary focus areas include designing resilient structures and the efficient planning of local communities in the Philippines against historical and future climate change typhoon-induced storm surge scenarios using numerical modelling and experimentation.
Some fun facts about Justin:
- He is generally shy but will randomly dance out of the blue to cheer people up and make them laugh.
- He can spend hours just sitting/walking alone, just thinking introvert things.
- He dreams to one day establish a volunteer school to support the future generation’s growth in STEM, as inspired by his favorite movie “3 Idiots”.
Let’s all say hi to Justin as we round out the last takeover for April!
