This week’s Pinoy Scientist is bound to touch your hearts with his music! Ending October is Jose Alfonso Ignacio “Oey” Mirabueno, a project coordinator for the Bachelor of Music Curriculum Review of the University of the Philippines (UP) College of Music.
Oey first completed his Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Minor in Filipino Literature at Ateneo de Manila University. Even then, his love for music came through with a thesis studying sight-reading skills in violinists through eye-tracking technology. After graduation, he was a research assistant for Dr. Alvin Yapan documenting papers on the works of Ricky Lee from university libraries across Metro Manila. He then worked as a Filipino Lecturer at the Ateneo before starting his Bachelor of Music in Musicology at UP Diliman. During his degree, he was a student assistant at the UP Center for Ethnomusicology. Oey also took on project assistantships for Sonic Entanglements under meLê yamomo and Decolonizing Southeast Asian Sound Archives (DeCoSEAS). The former dealt with discussions of Southeast Asian modernities in the 19th and 20th Century built around sound media studies in addition to print materials and artifacts. For the latter, his work revolved around decolonizing heritage curation through improving accessibility, transferring agency, and diversifying the dialogue around sound recordings made by colonial powers and heritage curation.
Oey has recently completed his degree at the UP College of Music as one of the first two summa cum laude graduates from the college’s Musicology Department. He is now a project coordinator for the Bachelor of Music Curriculum Review at UP, and is taking on various projects with the College of Music and UP Center of Ethnomusicology. He is also a part of Padayon Rondalla as an octavina player.
Some fun facts about Oey:
- He’s been a K-pop fan since 2008 (his ult group? Red Velvet!)
- Oey enjoys collecting refrigerator magnets as souvenirs from places/countries he’s visited
- Contrary to musician stereotypes, he does not have perfect pitch!
