To kick off the month of August – and Philippine Space Week – we’re blasting off with John Paul “JP” Almonte, a licensed Electronics Engineer and Senior Science Research Specialist at the Space Mission Control and Operations Division of the Philippine Space Agency.
JP graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Electronics and Communications Engineering from the University of the Philippines Diliman. Even as an undergraduate student, his work with the Wireless Communications Engineering Laboratory meant that he was involved with the Philippine space program from the word go. His research explored antenna design simulations for Diwata-1 under the PH-MICROSAT Program for the development of Philippine microsatellites. He then worked as a Science Research Specialist for the STAMINA4Space Program Project before entering the Kyushu Institute of Technology, Japan for his Master’s degree in Electrical and Space Systems Engineering under the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Human Resources Development for Space Technology Utilization Scholarship.
JP is now with the Philippine Space Agency as a Senior Science Research Specialist for their Space Mission Control and Operations Division. He manages the operations of satellite ground stations and the Philippine microsatellite Diwata-2. He also conducts outreach activities to encourage others into space careers.
Some fun facts about JP:
- He already has multiple hobbies ranging from playing instruments, traveling, photography, going to the gym, watching anime, and playing online games, but he wouldn’t say no to a new one.
- As of posting, he has a 1513-day streak on Duolingo from studying Italian and Japanese. He achieved this without having Super Duolingo. #Consistency
- You can get to know his different personalities and moods through his Spotify. My chill, laidback, and gusto ko magroadtrip side through OPM, a throwback to his emo punk rock high school days, Jpop and anime music exposing his weeb side, and his frustrated theatrical singer side through Broadway songs.
