Meet Jean Utzurrum, a Marine Biology Master’s student from Silliman University.
Jean took up her Bachelor’s degree in Biology also at Silliman University. After graduating, she immersed herself in a variety of roles – ranging from volunteering with Reef Check Philippines and the World Wildlife Fund to serving as an elasmobranch specialist for the Marine Wildlife Watch of the Philippines. Jean also worked on projects involving cetacean surveys and Apo Island monitoring. Currently, she is an RA for mesophotic fishes research.
Unsurprisingly, Jean is an avid swimmer having been in the swimming varsity in both high school and college. Now, she’s part of an all-women open water swim group. Despite her love for all things ocean, Jean has a soft spot for dogs.
Let’s all welcome Jean to the Pinoy Scientists fam!

Three years later, Jean is staying true to her love for the sea through her work as a consultant for the Marine Wildlife Watch of the Philippines. She specializes in the study of sharks, rays, and chimaeras, focusing on fisheries bycatch of these taxonomic groups. Just a few days ago, she co-published an article tackling cartilaginous fishes in Palawan in the Philippine Journal of Fisheries.
