Happy new year to all of our amazing Pinoy Scientists!
Opening up 2025 and the Year Of The Snake is Pinoy Scientist Jazz Ong, a wildlife educational speaker, herpetologist, and conservationist with the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity and LIGHT TV. Her primary work however is as the founder and director of Wildlife Matters.
Jazz completed her Bachelor of Arts in Organizational Communications at De La Salle University, eventually taking an additional Masters in Wildlife Science at the University of the Philippines Los Baños. In 2019, she founded Wildlife Matters Organization Inc. where she is now the director. During the time of its founding, Jazz also began to host its namesake show “Wildlife Matters” on LIGHT TV. As part of the non-profit’s work and as one of the few female professional venomous snake handlers in the country, Jazz created the first Snake Management Certification Course in the country. She eventually launched and is currently the project head for the King Cobra Initiative, a conservation project focused on King Cobras in the Philippines and providing communities with knowledge of human-snake interactions.
At the moment, Jazz is a Knowledge Management Associate at the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity while maintaining her work at LIGHT TV and Wildlife Matters. As an educational wildlife speaker, she has spoken at places like De La Salle University, Biodiversity Conservation Society of the Philippines, and more. In her free time, she volunteers at Manila Zoo, specializing in animal enrichment with big cats, elephants, birds, and monkeys.
