It’s time to introduce our next Pinoy Scientist. Meet Jay Fidelino, a wildlife biologist and MS Biology student at the University of the Philippines Diliman.

Before taking up his MS degree, Jay graduated cum laude with a BS Biology from UP Diliman. After graduating, he worked as a research assistant under the Commission on Higher Education’s Biodiversity and Resilience Program, focusing on understanding biodiversity at various scales.

Jay then became a research associate for various projects under UP Diliman’s Biodiversity Research Laboratory, such as monitoring biodiversity conservation in five Energy Development Corporation sites and assessing the biodiversity of the last remaining forests of San Jose, Tarlac. His current project involves defining the various characteristics of Philippine tarsiers in Mount Matutum.

Outside of work, Jay is a huge fan of the horror genre (maybe that’s why he timed his takeover for October). He’s read almost all of Stephen King’s works, with Pet Sematary as his personal favorite.

Jay also enjoys anything volleyball — following local and international leagues, as well as training and playing with a team for two years now. He loves the Japanese volleyball series Haikyuu and helped manage the UP Women’s Volleyball Team social media platforms for two years.

Finally, in his undergraduate days, Jay was a “suki” of org singing bees and quiz bees. His last successful foray was in 2017, at the UP Cineastes’ D’Original Jologs Quiz Show, where he placed third
