Ian Gonzales, M.D. is a public health physician and field epidemiologist at the Philippine Department of Health – Epidemiology Bureau.
Ian graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Xavier University – Ateneo de Cagayan, where he completed advanced ROTC, and was an active Red Cross volunteer. He then finished medical school at the same university as the top 2 of his graduating class.
As a student, Ian was interested in almost every subject but he always found community work to be the most interesting and underserved. As a physician, he briefly went into clinical practice as an otolaryngology-head and neck surgery resident before he went into public health by joining the Department of Health.
Ian also taught Preventive and Community Medicine at his alma mater. His interest in field work and data led him to pursue a fellowship in the Field Epidemiology Training Program (FETP). Currently, Ian works at the Epidemiology Bureau of the Department of Health, specifically on capacity development where he leads the training of future field epidemiologists and other public health workers.
Here are three fun facts about Ian:
- Ian went into medicine and public health because of his experience as a Red Cross volunteer.
- Ian enjoys hiking during his free time.
- Ian’s current job as a field epidemiologist allows him to combine medicine and hiking.
