Happy Easter! Taking over this week is Gaia Javier, a PhD candidate in Photovoltaic Engineering at the University of New South Wales in Australia.

Gaia graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Physics from the University of Philippines Baguio, after which she worked as a Junior Research Engineer at Edge Electrons. There, she developed algorithms and solved computational problems for electrical system design. She would also troubleshoot electrical circuits and test hardware.

Gaia then took up a Master of Science and Technology in Energy Environment at the Ècole Polytechnique in France. During her graduate studies, she developed a basic energy management system for cost optimization in a microgrid, among other activities. She also interned at the CEA Atomic Energy and Alternative Energies Commission and VEDECOM Institute for Sustainable Mobility.

For her doctorate, Gaia is developing quantitative approaches to improve solar cell characterisation and manufacturing. She is also a research assistant monitoring and collecting electrical measurements of photovoltaic system installations, as well as a casual academic mentoring students in designing a solar-powered car.

Fun facts about Gaia:

  • She loves playing Ultimate Frisbee (yes, it’s a sport)! It’s her favorite way to unwind, and she finds the community amazing!
  • She has two siblings, Hiyas and Mutya (their parents gave them unique names), who are also in the STEM field.
  • She is enthusiastic about role-playing campaign games. Currently, she is finishing Baldur’s Gate 3 with her boyfriend and other party members.
