To start off April and in honor of the upcoming World Quantum Day on April 14, we’re welcoming back Gabriel Gallardo , PhD, a product manager for quantum computing at Riverlane, United Kingdom. During his first takeover in 2020, Gabriel was a PhD student at the University of Oxford taking up experimental particle physics and was a scientist for the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider, CERN.

Gabriel graduated First-Class Honours from the University of Hong Kong with a Bachelor’s degree in Physics and Computer Science. Midway through his undergraduate degree, he spent a semester at the University of California, Irvine in the United States of America as a study abroad student. After completing his degree, he worked as a research assistant for a year at the University of Hong Kong’s Department of Physics where he began his data analysis work for the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. He took his D.Phil. in Particle Physics at the University of Oxford right after under the Oxford-CS Wu Scholarship. While there, he took on a number of positions, such as serving as a graduate teaching assistant and laboratory demonstrator. His doctoral research revolved around looking for dark matter through the ATLAS Experiment where he led the development and re-write of Python/C++ big data analysis frameworks for thousands of researchers on the project. During this time, he also produced YouTube videos on his life as a researcher and PhD student!

Once he had completed his PhD, Gabriel started working at Riverlane as a Quantum Engineer, eventually being promoted to Product Manager last year. The company leads development in quantum error correction, which is essential for quantum computing. In his current role, Gabriel manages engineers and scientists who are working on this technology for use in quantum computers.

Some fun facts about Gabriel:

  • He loves cooking!
  • Gabriel has also been learning how to make his own music
  • He is trying to be more grateful

Gabriel Gallardo's First Feature

October 04, 2020

Start the new month on a good note with our Pinoy Scientist of the week, Gabriel Gallardo.

Gabriel is presently a third year PhD student in experimental particle physics at the University of Oxford. Before undertaking his PhD, he graduated from the University of Hong Kong.

Gabriel's current research revolves around looking for dark matter. He's one of the 3,000+ people working on the ATLAS experiment, which is one of the four major experiments at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN!

Here's a few fun facts about Gabriel:

  1. For several years, he played on his high school's recorder team -- and was team captain at one point!
  2. Though he's not a father, he really enjoys dad jokes.
  3. Ideally, he'd like to have a single pair of shoes to use for every occasion ( formal, informal, walking, running, soccer). That way, he won't ever need more than one pair.
