Emzo de los Santos

Emzo de los Santos

Featured on February 2, 2020

It’s finally February! And we’re ringing in the new month with a new takeover: meet Emzo de los Santos, a research career development fellow at Warwick Integrative Synthetic Biology Centre. There, he develops computational tools for the analysis and engineering of biosynthetic gene clusters.

Even in his younger years, Emzo had an aptitude for science. Case in point: his kindergarten yearbook stated that he wanted to become a microbiologist! Emzo then graduated from the prestigious Philippine Science High School back in 2005. Afterwards, he took up his Bachelor’s degree in Biological Engineering at none other than the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Emzo then pursued his PhD in Bioengineering at another top school in the US – the California Institute of Technology.

Emzo’s primary research interests include synthetic biology, bioinformatics, next generation sequencing, drug discovery and computational protein design.

Funnily enough, Emzo actually wanted to be a paleontologist growing up, only to change his mind after learning there weren’t any dinos in the Philippines. To keep relaxed outside of work, Emzo also likes to watch terrible action movies. Maybe you guys could recommend a movie or two?

Let’s all welcome Emzo to the Pinoy Scientists community!
