Today we’re joined by Emmylou Nicolas who recently graduated with a Master of Biotechnology from the University of Adelaide in Australia.
Emmylou graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Bicol University, where her thesis examined the ability of extracts from ferns found in the Bulusan Volcano Natural Park to suppress blood vessel growth.
After working as a Special Science Teacher at the Sisa Feliciano Memorial High School, Emmylou embarked on her Master’s–using the Nobel Prize-winning gene editing tool CRISPR/Cas9 to investigate disease-causing gene variants.
As a current research assistant at the Neurogenetics Research Groups at the University of Adelaide, she is also exploring projects related to drug candidate screening and neurodevelopmental disorders.
Some fun facts about Emmylou:
- She set foot in Manila for the first time when she was 19 years old (her first time outside the Bicol region!)
- She’s been a Kpop fan since 2007 (aka the Super Junior era), and knows how to read and write Korean hangul
- Her go-to classical music when thesis writing is The Four Seasons by Antonio Vivaldi
Let’s all welcome Emmylou to the Pinoy Scientists fam!
