This week’s Pinoy Scientist is Diane Gubatanga, a chemical engineer, and Ph.D. candidate at the University of Tokyo who specializes in sustainable energy research, with emphasis on hydrogen production.
She graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering at the University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV) where her interest in waste-to-energy conversion technologies began.
Right after graduating from college, Diane pursued her Master’s and Ph.D. degree in Chemical Engineering major in Environment Studies at the University of Tokyo under the Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship. Her research project was about the conversion of lipid biomass into hydrogen using supercritical water as the reaction medium.
She believes in the importance of science communication in promoting research to society hence, she is active in joining research competitions. Recently, Diane won the 1st place in UTokyo’s Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition, and was among 1 of the chosen 5 research grant recipients of the Global Challenge Award sponsored by Leave a Nest Co., Ltd. These opportunities allowed her to fund her research, as well as participate in workshops and conferences.
Fun facts about Diane
- She can’t sleep without drinking coffee in the evening.
- She loves extreme roller coasters and scary rides (check out those Guinness World Record-certified rides at Fuji-Q highland!)
- She loves math and chemistry, but is still working on her social science skills.
