Christina Maher is a PhD candidate in the School of Biomedical Engineering and Brain and Mind Centre at the University of Sydney.

Christina is a biomedical engineer and neuroscientist using AI to map the brain’s information highways. Her research interests are in the structure and function of the brain in chronic neurological disorders.

Christina crossed over into biomedical engineering after completing an undergraduate in psychology/neuroscience. Previously, she was working in a software engineering team in a global bank and she wanted to do something that combined her interests in healthcare, neuroscience and AI so biomed engineering was the perfect fit.

Christina just submitted her PhD in March and currently works in collaboration with several different groups in Sydney – the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, the University of Sydney’s Brain and Mind Centre and School of Biomedical Engineering.

Christina loves teaching so she is also a course coordinator for a multidisciplinary unit 3rd year undergraduate unit where she teach students the research process and gets them to conduct a research project to address a real life issue.

Ultimately, her mission is to apply personalised medicine to improve the healthcare and quality of life for people living with chronic conditions.

Three fun facts about Christina:

  1. She was born in Manila, grew up in Thailand and is now living in beautiful Australia.
  2. She has 4 younger siblings
  3. She loves cooking and trying to recreate dishes from when she (occasionally) eats at nice restaurants

Let’s all welcome Christina to Pinoy Scientists!
