Rounding out the month of April is Pinoy Scientist Dr. Charles John Gunay, a licensed agricultural and biosystems engineer who recently completed his PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the Tokyo Metropolitan University. He is currently serving as an agricultural engineering section head and associate consultant at Dream Agritech Consultancy Services.
Charles graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering from the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB). After working as a university research associate and instructor at his alma mater and Laguna State Polytechnic University, he received a Monbukagakusho (MEXT) Scholarship from Japan to study Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Tokyo Metropolitan University. He completed his Master’s in 2021, and finished his PhD in Engineering last month, March of 2024. His research specializes primarily in hydraulics, water resources engineering, and watershed and dam management.
While doing his postgraduate studies, he served as a teaching assistant and began his work at Dream Agritech Consultancy Services as an agricultural engineering section head and associate consultant. At the moment, Charles remains a consultant and has plans to work at the UPLB School of Environmental Science and Management as an assistant professor later this year.
Some fun facts about Charles:
- When he was in Japan doing his PhD, he often spent his weekends and holidays doing solo hiking. Fortunately, most mountains in the Kanto region are safe for forest bathing, and he has not yet encountered any bears. There have been wild deer and (supposedly) harmless snakes though.
- He loves planning local sightseeing trips with his friends. After the time, place, and budget are settled, the Excel sheet comes out to make a detailed itinerary.
- He enjoys catching Pokémon in claw machines. His favorite set of plush toys are the first gen starters: Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle.
