Integrating science with social work, Pinoy Scientist Cathy Manalo is an NGO worker focused on countermapping and human rights. She is the co-founder of Ulirat Collective and the Executive Director of the Human Rights and People Empowerment Center (HRPEC). Together with her organizations, her efforts are geared towards opening and claiming spaces, in their various forms, where people can actively participate in asserting their rights. She has collaborated with different groups and movements for this cause.
She studied BS Geology at the University of the Philippines Diliman, and learning about the earth’s minerals and resources compelled her to ask questions on how the land is used. Those questions later urged her to join university organizations that forwarded inclusive development and social justice.
In keeping with the week of World Science Day for Peace and Development, celebrated every November 10, Cathy believes in employing participatory methods and collective work to further scientific knowledge. She also believes in using science to advance human rights.
