With a story that will be music to your ears, this week we have Benedic “Ben” Justine Velasco, an Audio Conservation Laboratory Assistant for the University of the Philippines (UP) Center for Ethnomusicology and Master’s student in Archives and Records Management.
Ben started out his journey in 2011 at the UP Diliman College of Music. He graduated with a Bachelor of Music, major in Music Education in 2016 after which he began working as an Audio Conservation Laboratory Assistant at the UP Center for Ethnomusicology. Throughout the years, he has made good use of his specialty in music education, serving as a resource person in workshops and camps. He has also done work with the Department of Science and Technology-Advanced Science and Technology Institute as a project staff for the KATUNOG Development of a Philippine Indigenous Instruments Sound Database project in collaboration with his home institute. He was also a technical assistant for the Atmospheres: Ugnayan @ 50, a celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Jose Maceda’s masterpiece, Ugnayan.
Ben is now a Master’s student in Archives and Records Management at the UP School of Library and Information Studies, and is continuing his work at the Center of Ethnomusicology. He recently presented a poster at the 9th National Archives Congress, and earlier this year was a workshop resource for Saribuhay: Paghabi ng Husay at Musika.
Some fun facts about Ben:
- He learned how to bike during the pandemic (2020) and is at present still an active bike-to-work and active mobility advocate
- He is a hifi audio enthusiast. In general, he likes all things audio
- Zapdos and Starmie are his favorite pokemon.
