For our final takeover of the month, we have Arielle R. Gamboa, a PhD candidate and graduate research assistant at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in the United States.

Arielle got her Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering at Rutgers University (RU) in New Jersey, US. While there, she became a research assistant through the Aresty Summer Science Program. Her undergraduate research work focused on micro- and nanofabrication techniques to develop hierarchical structures, eventually performing her own thesis in the same laboratory. During her time at RU, she also began teaching, taking on tutoring and instructor roles throughout her stay. After graduating, she remained at the university for her Master’s, which she completed a year later.

To continue her studies in mechanical engineering, Arielle moved to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) where she is currently a PhD candidate. Her recent research work sees her in the Energy Transport Research Lab where she focuses her attention on the field of heat transfer, studying the fundamental physics of liquid cooling for electronics. Just this March 2023, she, together with other members of the laboratory team, published a patent for the thermal coating of power electronics boards.

While studying at UIUC, she has also held a number teaching positions. Her first role was as a fluid mechanics teaching assistant but her most recent was as a thermodynamics graduate teaching fellow.

Some fun facts about Arielle:

  • She was born in Manila, lived in Bacoor, Cavite, then moved to Dubai, UAE where she lived for 12 years! She then moved to the US to study.
  • She has a pet Russian dwarf hamster named Curtis.
  • Her lab group – the Energy Transport Research Lab at UIUC, has 54 graduate students and postdoctoral researchers.
